When people think of a gaming desktop, they think of these towering machines that look alien in nature and cost a fortune. However, the reality is that you cannot be more wrong.

Yes, there was a time when ready made desktops were big, huge, expensive compared to a custom made gaming desktop, however, that has changed a lot in the recent days.

What are the benefits of getting a branded gaming desktop as compared to a custom one?

  • The warranty is easy to claim as you just have to deal with one vendor for all of the components.
  • They are optimized. The hardware is well optimized for their price range. The brands know how to configure their components better than an individual. They even have proprietary components installed.
  • They look kickass and they have their proprietary designs.

If you have a huge budget, then yes you can consider building your own PC; however, if you have a limited budget and want to play safe, then going for a branded gaming desktop is more viable as we will discover more in this HP OMEN 870-251 review.

Brief Overview

This is not just a great gaming desktop, but also great for general productivity. The highlights of this desktop include an awesome graphics card at a very reasonable price tag.

The overall configuration of the hardware is designed to complement each other. If you are aware of bottlenecking, then this is a system in which no hardware component will get bottlenecked by the other.

So what you get in the end is pure performance/dollar value from each components.

Note that that this does not come with a monitor.

Hardware Configuration

Let us now delve a bit deeper in to the hardware configuration of this HP OMEN 870-251. You should be aware that there are other models and variations available for HP Omen 870.

This particular model is excellent for those who are on a tight budget and want to squeeze as much as they can out of each dollar they spend.

In terms of future, this gaming desktop should last you for at least 2 – 3 years. By that I mean, it should be able to play games on high graphics (granted the resolution is set to a reasonable degree) for next 2 -3 years.

This is a pretty compact desktop so it should be easy to carry around. Of course the portability here is relative. You cannot expect it to handle like a gaming laptop.

If you are deciding between this and a gaming laptop, then just know that you can never get the same performance from a laptop at this price range. You can have a look at ASUS M580VD-EB76 review or MSI PL62 7RC-001 review for example.

Motherboard

Odense2-K is a propriety motherboard used in all HP Omen 870 including this HP OMEN 870-251.

HP OMEN 870-251 motherboard

This is a 9.4 x 9.4 inches motherboard. Therefore in terms of form factor, it is quite compact.

You can tell that this is not a highly configurable motherboard. It only has two memory slots for DDR 4 RAM and one One PCIe (GEN 3) x16 socket expansion slot. So  you cannot have crossfire or SLI configuration on this naturally.

It does have on M.2 socket for the SSD that already comes installed.

As far as the chipset and the socket is concerned, it supports the latest 7th generation Kaby Lake processors from Intel. It does not; however, have the support for Core Extreme processors. Chances are that you wouldn’t care about that much since a core extreme processors costs as much as this desktop.

IO

Processor

HP OMEN 870-251 features Intel Core i5-7400 processor. This is a quad core processor that does not have hyper threading enabled. So you will naturally have 4 working threads.

I know some of you perfectionist out there would get disappointed by the fact that it does not have a Core i7 processor.

Well first things first, you get what you pay for. Secondly, this is not a bad processor at all. Do not compare with the Core i5-processor of the same value in a gaming laptop because this is better by leaps and bounds.

The processor offers 3.00 GHz clockspeed per core and 6 MB cache.

Is this overclockable? No it is not, unfortunately.

RAM

The RAM on HP OMEN 870-251 is a bit lacking. If you are looking for a very high productivity then you have will have to definitely expand it.

This desktop offers 8 GB of DDR 4 RAM operating 2133 MHz.

Since the motherboard only has 2 slots for memory, you will have to scrap one if you want to upgrade.

The maximum supported memory is 16 GB on a 64-bit system.

Storage

HP OMEN 870-251 shines in this department. Not only does it offer 256 GB of SSD, it also offers 1 TB of HDD operating at the rate of 7200 RPM.

Therefore, you can utilize SSD for frequently used apps and the operating system and you can use the HDD for larger files. 7200 RPM hard disks are significantly better than their 5400 RPM counterparts.

Graphics Card

This is what it all boils down to. HP OMEN 870-251 packs the best AMD POLARIS graphic card that AMD RX 480 with 4 GB GDDR 5 RAM.

In terms of performance it is comparable to NVIDIA GeForce 1060 (Desktop version) and has the capacity to support most latest game on Ultra settings with FHD resolution and many games at UHD resolution.

With one HDMI and 3 x Display Port, you should be able to connect up to 4 displays at once. However, depending on the configuration and your monitors, you many need an active adapter.

You can read the benchmark for this graphics card here.

Peripherals and Additional Features

HP OMEN 870-251 ships with an HP mouse and a keyboard. The overall dimensions of the unpacked chassis is 15.79″ x 16.54″ x 6.50″ (LxWxH).

You also get a DVD writer. Unfortunately, this desktop does not offer Blu-ray Disc support.

It comes with an external 500W power supply which is sufficient for running this desktop.

The system comes installed with Windows 10 operating system (64-bit) Home Edition, and several other software for productivity.

It also offers built-in WiFi and Bluetooth 4.2 for easy interfacing.

HP OMEN 870-251 Review Conclusion

HP OMEN 870-251 is a gaming desktop in every sense of the word gaming. It has one of the best graphics card available for the money and should be able to support all of the latest titles at ultra graphics with a reasonable frame rate.

Besides that, it is also a productivity desktop. You may need to upgrade the RAM capacity a bit if you are professional editor or designer, but for a beginner and even for intermediate use, this is more than enough.
